It begins the thirteenth field campaign to study the breeding population of Eleonora’s falcon from the Archipiélago Chinijo, Lanzarote.
Last week we went to Montaña Clara to temporarily install some antennas so we could download the information that some individuals have in their «GPS-dataloggers».
As in Montaña Clara, we will mount several antennas on Alegranza, where we will set up the base camp for the whole campaign. Once installed, the census of the breeding population begins. We spend about a month doing this task, locating the active nests at long distances by using country-scopes and binoculars. This is because most pairs are now incubating and it is therefore very important to try not to interfere in any way in the reproduction or cause unnecessary disturbance to the birds. In addition, we devote a lot of time identifying the color morph of breeding adults, as well as reading the plastic rings that most birds have.
Por decimotercer año consecutivo empezamos con la campaña de campo destinada a estudiar la población nidificante de Halcón de Eleonor en el Archipiélago Chinijo, Lanzarote.
La semana pasada subimos a Montaña Clara para instalar temporalmente algunas antenas y así poder descargar la información que portan algunos ejemplares en los dispositivos «GPS-dataloggers» que tienen colocados.
En Alegranza montaremos antenas al igual que en Montaña Clara e instalaremos el campo base desde el que discurrirá la campaña. Luego dedicaremos aproximadamente un mes para censar la población reproductora localizando los nidos a distancia, la mayor parte de las parejas se encuentra ahora mismo incubando y de ahí la importancia de observar las colonias a distancia mediante el uso de prismáticos y telescopios terrestres, para no interferir de modo alguno en la reproducción ni causar molestias innecesarias a las aves. Además dedicaremos tiempo a identificar individualmente a los ejemplares que portan anillas plásticas de lectura a distancia y a determinar el morfo de los adultos reproductores.
